ON Reading Journals and Magazines - Reading Kumudham, anadha vikatan, tamil magazines is bad for intellectual health, but good for emotional health?

I always believed exposure makes a difference, atleast it stands as a starting point. How do we get exposure, thats a big question and how to make most of it is another.Medium like TV,newspapers, magazines,a new set of people with different background and many more are the sources of exposure.Atleast to certain extent, all childrens and teenagers, even the 2010 teenagers are of in limited zone
and not able to open their wings. When i was young i was provided minimum of exposure like TV,The Hindu(used to stare the pictures, nothing more, the content and language is formed of strong society background and intellectuals) and magazine like Kumudam,Anandha Vikatan(Used to purchase them in Thursday nights KUMUDAM-Rs.2.25 and Anandha Vikatan-Rs.3.50 in 90s).

Reading is a habit cultivated by seeing the parents and mine is no different too.As these 2 magazines at one point started to excite me(since its not intellectuallly demanding and no other outlet or option?),especially Hai Madhan(Started in January-14,1995(Pongal) and running till date) in AV(Madhan is a pseudonym ,a Physics graduate with encylopedic knowledge and a cartoonist).Infact was told by school teachers its not advisable to read them(Kumudam,Anandha Vikatan) and indicates reading them are of poor intellectual standard(may be becuse of middle page in Kumudam).AV is of quality journalism(infact they train journalists who are in college tenure i guess-manavar pathirikai payaerchi from 1984 to 1992 and from 2000 to present has created hundreds of people with good quality journalism training).AV is bought by Padma Bhushan SSVasan(Thiruthuraipoondi Subramaniam Srinivasan) a film producer, enterprenur( advertising space-seller, a novelist, translator and a catalogue-shopping vendor before entering the field of journalism) for 100 rupees for each letter in the title Anandha Vikatan(8 X 10 = 800) from Boodhalur sastrigal.Thiruthuraipoondi Subramanian Srinivasan, who came to be known as S.S. Vasan, was associated with both journalism and cinema. Before entering the field of journalism he was multi dimensional person, his production and direction skills were of high aim and standard ,infact his film titles Madhankamarajan and Aboorva sakodharargal inspired Kamal film titles. His film Chandralekha a blingual release (Hindi,Tamil) made with maximum cost and theatre releases at his days(a visionary born at wrong time, probably if he was alive Endhiran could have come at 1980).He bought the Ananda Vikatan in 1928 and shaped it into a leading
Tamil weekly. The `Gemini twins' became a household symbol and the Gemini flyover was named after the original studio at that junction. He visited the planet earth during 10 March 1903 – 26 August 1969,extremely simple man who had left an unambiguous instruction to his family to desist from any activity that would be
tantamount to propagation of his name. Some of the information provided by Anandha Vikatan is on par with international standard(wow 2000,jokes,stories,film review-62.5 is the highest which is for the movie 16 Vayathinilae,55 for film Bharathi,Mullum malaram also got good marks etc).Infact it has raised and shaped the standard of journalism and its audience. Madhan(July 11-1947 Born - Srirangam) one of the famous name in Vikatan family was a hero to me,when i was young, whose real name is Maadapoosi Krishnaswamy Govinda Kumar, is a famous Tamil cartoonist, journalist, writer and film critic (His wife Jayanthi is from Kumbakonam. He has two daughters, Divya and Amidha). The news of him quitting Anandha Vikatan in the 90s and joining Kumudam is of shock to me(he came back to AV on latter stage).Someof his works are below which is of good quality:
Manidhanum Marmangalum

KiMu -KiPi

Hi Madhan

Vandhargal Vendrargal

Vikatan over the years has provided the opportunity for many great Tamil writers such as Kalki Krishnamurthy கல்கி கிருஷ்னமூர்த்தி,P.SRINIVASAN(P .SRI), Devan தேவன், Sujatha Rangarajan (சுஜாதா), Kalaimani Kothamangalam Subbu கலைமணி கொத்தமங்கலம் சுப்பு and Nadodi நாடோடி, to name a few(Kothamangalam Subhu story Thillana Mohanambal was made into famous picture),Gnani (ஞாநி) and not to miss Madhan (மதன்) are some of the well-known contributors to Vikatan.கி. ராஜநாராயணன் Gopalapurathu Makkal got published in Vikatan got famous literary award Sahitya Akademi award in 1991(famous folklorist) ,Akilon’s novel ‘Chithira Pavai’ which won the Bharatiya Jnanpith Award in 1975, was serialised in the magazine during 1967.(Many more to name Devibala's Madaisar Mammi, author savi, maninas stories etc)

ANANDA VIKATAN which pioneered the Deepavali Special Number (Deepavali Malar) in Tamil journalism. These special issues have been lavish productions, with contributions from eminent men in public life and authors of repute, besides illustrations and paintings by leading artists.Several literary competitions conducted by the magazine with the offer of substantial cash prizes and medals have resulted in the discovery of new writing talents, besides inspiring a keener edge to the creativity of practising professionals.According to the Audit Bureau of Circulation, for the period of July-December 2004, the circulation stood at 4,30,534 per week. However Largest selling magazine in chennai is Kumutham it is fifteen lack circulation per week.Kumaudam is famous for innovation(traditional section in magazine like a hotel menu is broken by Kumudam) ,interviews, gossips, too much cinema news, being casual, mischievious and funny instead of chasing
ideal like AV.

Kumudam is a household name that denotes the most popular publication in Tamil Nadu enjoying the highest readership and circulation consistently over the last 5 decades. Startedin1947 by the doyen of Tamil Journalism,Late Mr. S.A.P. Annamalai and his close associate Mr. P.V.Parthasarathy, the organization has a history of innovations, SIMPLE,READABLE content, a strong distribution or association among the print media groups in India.A readership of over 52 lakhs, as per the National Readership Survey, which is one of the most comprehensive studies conducted in India about national and regional publications.Regular readership of Kumudam is larger than the average viewership of the most popular satellite TV program in Tamil Nadu. The average time spent on reading Kumudam, as per the NRS, 2001, is also higher than that spent watching an episode of most TV serials.Over 40% of its readers do not watch any satellite TV even once a week.

Journalism is bringing truth which is of wide spectrum in society to a common man,it may give truth ,but shouldnt command, advice or hypnotise to their commentaries and opinions.Choice should be peoples, truth is going to be the winner even when its shuttuled between people ,the source and its medium of
journalism.Dont worry on the any parts, truth will truimph.Coming back to the title "Reading Kumudham, anadha vikatan, tamil magazines is bad for intellectual health, but good for emotional health?",i believe nothing as such,it depends on the subject. Its reader choice, the ignorable parts and good parts.
